An old flat share

In the 12th and 13th centuries, the cohabitation of lords offered several lineages the opportunity to gather around a strategic defensive site, called a castrum, while retaining their separate rights and possessions. Each family had its own fortified residential tower, a true symbol of its autonomy, rank and power, but all had to unite to ensure the protection of the whole. These families were often not permanently on site, as they administered several scattered estates, but they would return to the site as soon as a threat arose, particularly during the incursions and clashes that punctuated the Hundred Years' War or during attacks by mercenaries.

This form of organisation fostered military and political solidarity, which was essential to the community's survival, while illustrating the feudal fragmentation characteristic of the Middle Ages. The Towers of Merle are a remarkable testament to the complexity of feudal ties: cautious coexistence, necessary mutual aid and latent tensions coexisted in this fortified microcosm, which was joined by villagers who had settled around the rocky outcrop and sought protection.

Today, the site has changed significantly since our first visit. The facilities have been restored and modernised, offering a warm and functional welcome with picnic tables, a shop, toilets and landscaped trails. Above all, the programme of events has been considerably enriched: historical activities, daytime and evening shows, medieval re-enactments and immersive activities now punctuate the seasons, with a particularly busy summer schedule. These new features complement the traditional guided tours and allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the history and unique atmosphere of the Towers of Merle.
